Echocardiography probe positioning Echocardiography anatomy
Parasternal long
  • Probe at L of sternum, ~3rd intercostal space, indicator pointing to pt's RIGHT shoulder
 
Parasternal short
  • Rotate 90 degrees to parasternal long in same position - indicator to pt's LEFT shoulder
  • Translate probe along heart axis to look at different LV cross-sections
cross-section of LV; want to look at level of papillary muscles and assess contractility
Apical 4-chamber  
Sub-xyphoid (?5-chamber)  
IVC  

 Troubleshooting

  • Can roll patient on L side to bring heart closer to surface
  • Difficult on obese pts (body wall) and small pts (small rib spaces)...

Interpretation of formal echo

  • Right heart
    • TAPSE - normal > 0.5
